Himalayan Farmstays was established in July 2016 as a platform to create tourism opportunities for the village homes of Ladakh. Under this initiative, they are currently running 40 farm-stays in 5 Ladakhi villages where women led homes are open for discerning travellers to experience the authentic Ladakhi lifestyle. They also run customized curated itineraries to unveil an
authentic unexplored Ladakh. This initiative also strengthens local economy by allowing Ladakhi entrepreneurs to take a step towards sustainable, responsible tourism.
Arriving at Leh airport early and we are transferred through a breathtaking landscape to a beautiful passive solar farmstay in Phyang, 16 km away from the airport. This family home uses the abundant solar energy to keep the house warm and comfortable even during the extreme winters of Ladakh. On arrival at the property, you will be served with tea and snacks. The Himalayan Farmstays team will then brief you about tour protocols and emergency procedures. We will rest and acclimatize for the day. Ladakh is a high altitude cold desert with a low level of atmospheric oxygen. It is therefore, absolutely necessary that we give ourselves sufficient time for acclimatization before engaging in any physical activity.
The group will visit SECMOL campus - a school based on alternative education known for its eco-friendly infrastructure and lifestyle, founded in 1988 by a group of young Ladakhis with the aim to reform the educational system of Ladakh. After SECMOL, comes the visit to the Ice stupa in Ganglas valley - an artificial glacier innovated by Sonam Wangchuk aimed towards solving the problem of water shortage in the face of climate change, while also restoring ecologically damaged valleys of Ladakh. In the late afternoon we will visit to the famous Shanti Stupa in Leh, known for its cultural significance and picturesque sunset. Back at the farmstay, we will end our day with hot delicious food prepared by the host family.
In the morning, we will travel on NH1 (Leh-Srinagar highway) to visit Sangam - the confluence of two important rivers of the region: Indus and Zanskar, Zanskar being the site of famous Chadar trek. We will continue to travel west, reach Alchi village and visit the monastery. Nested in lower valleys of Ladakh, Alchi monastery is a complex of multiple temples of Indo-Himalayan style with well preserved murals and statues dating back to 11th - 12th century. Thereafter, we will travel to Ulley village, where the accommodation for the night has been arranged.
